One June 5, 2017 OpenIV said they received a cease and desist letter from Take-Two ( Parent company of Gta 5 developer rockstar games) . In letter there was written that
allow[s] third-parties to defeat security features of its software and modify that software in violation Take-Two’s rights.
OpenIV said they could get to the court for this to demonstrate that modding should be within its fair use, but the company decided not to.
Going to court will take at least few months of our time and huge amount of efforts, and, at best, we’ll get absolutely nothing,” it said. “Spending time just to restore status quo is really unproductive, and all the money in the world can’t compensate the loss of time.
Taking this as a note , OpenIV decided to strop distributing their mods and take down all their ongoing mods. OpenIV said
“It was a hard decision, but when any modding activity has been declared illegal, we can’t see any possibilities to continue this process,” it said. “Unless top management of Take-Two company makes an official statement about modding, which can be used in court.”
We have contacted OpenIV that if they are going to release news mods with different organization names or something , what are their next plans . We will update you as soon as we gets a reply from them.
